It was with great disappointment that we saw the misguided firearms ban implemented by the federal government. Whether or not you are a firearms owner or not, or whether or not you own any of these now illegal firearms you should be greatly concern with the manner in which this was implemented.

The first issue is that it was implemented through order in council, OIC, which essentially is a small group of people within the government making the law without going through the democratic process. Democracy is the basis of our society and eliminating this process that allows everyone on both sides of the debate to have their say is an extremely concerning situation.

The other major problem that all Canadians should be concerned with is the total misinformation and circumventing of the facts that the government put forth in their effort to sway the general public. To label these banned firearms as “military-like assault weapons” and say they are firearms “designed for the battlefield” are inaccurate and simply designed to sensationalize the governments political agenda. They are neither military assault weapons or used on the battlefield as they are not capable of fully automatic fire. Fully automatic firearms were banned in Canada back in the late 1970’s and large capacity magazines were banned in the early 90’s for semi-automatic firearms, which is what the majority of these recently banned firearms are.

This is much more than just about firearms this is about democracy, transparency and truth in government, something that every Canadian deserves. Because of that this the executive of the St. Paul Fish and Game Association has sent a letter to the Minister of Public Safety and the Prime Minister of Canada to oppose this hasty and misguided law.
